EAAs vs whey: why free-form wins
the protein myth, explained. it changes how you think about muscle.
the supplement industry built its business on a simple number: grams of protein. the bigger the number, the better the product. 25g, 30g, 50g per serving. the arms race was always about quantity.
the problem is that muscle does not run on grams. it runs on amino acid availability. and those are very different things.
whey protein is a complete protein source — it contains all nine essential amino acids. that part is true and useful.
but whey is a food. your body treats it as food. it enters your stomach, gets broken down by enzymes over 1.5-3 hours, and the resulting amino acids are gradually released into your bloodstream. by the time your muscles are actually receiving usable amino acids, the training window has often passed.
additionally, whey raises insulin. which, as covered in lab report 01, closes the fat-oxidation window. you cannot train fasted and meaningfully supplement with whey at the same time. the physiology does not allow it.
free-form EAAs are not food. they are individual amino acid molecules that require no digestion. they cross the intestinal wall directly into the bloodstream, raising plasma amino acid levels within 15-30 minutes. low-dose free-form EAA supplementation has been shown to effectively stimulate muscle protein synthesis on its own.
research shows that free-form EAAs raise plasma amino acid levels significantly faster than whey, reaching higher peak concentrations sooner — critical when whey's insulin response would close the fat-oxidation window during fasted training. that speed, not a claim of superior muscle protein synthesis, is the actual mechanism at work here.
in the fasted state, this matters completely. you get the anabolic signal — muscle preservation and synthesis — without breaking the metabolic environment that makes fasted training effective.
